Ms. Ruth Wilhem Mukhongo is a PhD student in Soil Science at Makerere University-Uganda under the COMPRO II project funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). Her research objective is on integration of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi into soil phosphorus management for sweet potato production in Uganda. She holds a Master’s degree in Soil Science from the University of Eldoret-Kenya with special focus on the combination of microbial and chemical commercial products on survival and growth of tissue cultured banana using soils from Central, Nyanza and Coast provinces of Kenya. Her MSc studies were funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through IITA, COMPRO I project. She also holds an Upper Second Class Honors degree in Horticulture from Moi University, Eldoret-Kenya.
During her undergraduate studies, she carried out a special project on the production of kales; determining the correct lime rate to be applied in acidic soils of UasinGishu District for high yields.She is joining SoilCares Africa Ltd as a Soil Scientist for technical development.
She has worked as an Agricultural Agronomist with the Society of General Surveillance (SGS) Kenya Ltd. She has also worked with Crop Nutrition Laboratory Services Ltd as a Soil Scientist in a project based in Western, Nyanza and Rift Valley provinces of Kenya sensitizing smallholder farmers on the importance of soil analysis, interpreting soil analysis results and implementation of recommendations for higher crop yields. She has done internships at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), National Agricultural Research Laboratories (NARL) and at Woni Veg-Fru Importers and Exporters Ltd in Kenya. Ruth has also participated in JR Biotek Foundation’s molecular laboratory training courses both in Nigeria (IITA) and the University of Cambridge. She was fully sponsored by the BBSRC Global Challenge Fund to participate in the workshop in Cambridge. We are pleased to welcome her to our team as the Country Coordinator for Kenya and Uganda.
