From Lab Training to Impact: Beakal’s Journey with JR Biotek Foundation
Beakal Tadesse Girma wrote “JR Biotek provided me with invaluable hands-on training in the practical aspects of molecular biology. Through their programs, I gained experience in essential techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction, which became the foundation of my lab skills. During the COVID-19 period, I also participated in several theoretical sessions that deepened my understanding of research concepts and introduced me to advanced data analysis and visualization tools.
These experiences significantly enhanced my ability to work independently and played a crucial role in helping me secure scholarships in my field. They also prepared me to thrive in larger, more advanced laboratories, where I now conduct my research with greater accuracy and efficiency.
My PhD research at the University of Cape Town focuses on identifying drought-tolerant Tef genotypes and understanding their mechanisms of tolerance using morpho-physiological and molecular approaches. In addition, as a scientist at the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, my work centers on improving food crops through conventional breeding methods to enhance productivity and resilience. The skills and knowledge I gained from JR Biotek have been instrumental in strengthening my research capabilities and applying innovative techniques to my work.
Beyond technical skills, JR Biotek facilitated networking opportunities with African researchers, allowing me to collaborate and exchange research insights. Their business incubation programs broadened my professional perspective, encouraging me to think beyond traditional research and explore innovative opportunities in agriculture.
Overall, JR Biotek’s support has been instrumental in accelerating my research journey and shaping my career in molecular biology. The experience has fostered an innovative mindset, motivating me to be part of the solution in my field and to consider business opportunities alongside scientific research. Professionally, the training and connections I gained have made me more competitive, helping me secure grants and further advance in my career.”
Beakal is a PhD researcher at the University of Cape Town, South Africa and a Scientist at the Ethiopian Agricultural Research Institute, Ethiopia.
